STEP INTO SEPTEMBER

WORLD ALZHEIMER’S DAY

On Saturday 21st of September, we hosted a day to remember as we raised awareness for World Alzheimer’s Day in the Devonshire Lyons Tea Room! From FREE Singing & Afternoon Tea to thoughtful care tips, our wholesome day got under way from 10:30am to the chime of soul soothing warmups that sparked moments of reminiscence.

Ran annually to benefit family carers through the power of community support, our unmissable morning of magic dazzled as much as the delightful afternoon tea that we served with style. We want to thank everyone who joined us for a lovely day. Whether it was seeing our regular attendees again or meeting those from the community who joined us for the first time, we look forward to more special days together!

BIG HEART BAND

Big Heart Band got underway to a chorus of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ as we felt more ‘together’ than ever with the Residents, spending the day waltzing into Wednesday with plenty of gusto!

Residents singing

Jeremy wowed us with songs of the past, requests of the present and timeless moments that’ll live long in the future. Alistair epitomised the joy by saying: ‘I always look forward to coming here’.

Why Do We Sing? Research has shown that singing releases endorphins that can make us feel happier. Poetry, prayer, rhyme and rhythm are the gifts of dementia. When we sing, we have found that people living with dementia become more engaged.

Whether it was Jacqui’s typically upbeat demeanour as she displayed her musical instrument or Carmel and Cathy’s relentless waves of laughter, we showed our awe for our awesome band as this afternoon of fun proved to be ‘big hearted’ in more ways than one.
