NOT MUCH SUN, BUT PLENTY OF FUN!

 TEEPA CAME TO TOWN

We were delighted to welcome back the legend in dementia care Teepa Snow and her Positive Approach to Care (PAC)® team for a week from 1st to 5th July. We were thrilled to have attendees from all over the world, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czechia, France, Portugal, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

The participants were inspired, grateful, emotional and determined to spread the awareness that they had gained. They experienced numerous “Aha” moments, reflected in the comments some of them made, such as “You don’t realise what you don’t know” and “I am so upset I didn’t know this when I was caring for my dad”. The delegates spent a week in a beautiful marquee in the Devonshire’s tranquil garden and enjoyed making new friends whilst practising what they learnt. There was plenty of breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea to sustain learning. Dementia creates changes in factual memory, but the emotional memory of feeling is still there. We learnt how not to trigger the emotional fight or flight response to decrease any screaming, punching and fighting back.

PAC training is very specific and is aimed at various adult learning methods, which is so easy and appeals to all minds. Teepa’s Snow Approach™ is a series of simple techniques based on understanding the areas of the brain that are no longer working and encouraging the parts of the brain that are still active, so you can protect and grow your relationship as well as experience less resistance and stress. It therefore showed us how to focus on retained abilities of the person living with dementia. Not focusing on the losses.

From showing us techniques that support brain changes to hand under hand® when assisting with meals, dressing and washing, every nugget of support helped us reframe our perspective and allowed us to understand how those living with dementia express their needs, fears and emotions through actions. We worked at decoding these messages by understanding the feeling behind the words.

Tennis

Wimbledon Tennis returned to the Centre Court-Yard of our gardens and our lounge as we enjoyed yet another set of joyful activities. From ‘love’ to the ‘advantages’ of friendly competition, Janet ‘aced’ her turn as she smiled with confidence. Larry delightfully reflected by saying: ‘I used to play, you know’ as he covered all angles for a grand slam of an afternoon. Rallying around the tables for a crowd pleasing event, Annette was excited to see how Christine would fare as she looked happy, relaxed as she said: ‘Game, set and match!’
