Life at the Devonshire - Activities in June

Welcome to our activities in June section of 'Life at the Devonshire' newsletter. We always welcome your feedback and suggestions.

Happy reading!

Stay Safe and well from all of us at the Devonshire.

COLOURING AND PAINTING

Our most popular arts and craft activity is interesting for some of our Residents such as Muriel, Devika and Mary. All ladies enjoy precise motions and stay well within the lines. Devika and Mary like painting nature – leaves and delicate flowers and have very graceful strokes. Muriel focused on the double decker bus. She explained between her humming that this was the bus she used to take to go into town to shop; she also said she needed to paint it red and black. On another occasion. consistently being particular and precise, when the pencil tips kept breaking she told staff member Larry “The pencil tips keep breaking so next time you need to buy them from a good shop!” Resident Violet can keep colouring for more than an hour without a break. She tells us that she has always coloured and loves matching all the colours to get the perfect picture. When she finishes her masterpiece, she surveys her work and loves showing staff her accomplishment.

FLOWER ARRANGING

Flower arranging continues to keep Dorothy, Jean, Eileen E, Devika, Ruth and Joyce very occupied. They create beautiful arrangements daily, which are then distributed throughout the house and the day centre. Creating the small bouquet arrangements seems to be the most popular activity at the moment.  Resident Ruth likes humming to herself and smiles continuously. Resident Joyce was delighted to make a new friend (Eileen) during the flower arranging. She exclaimed “I had such a great time, we made an arrangement for my daughter Tina in different colours. I am sure she is going to love it when she comes to see me later”.

PUZZLE TIME

Residents Devika and Beatrice have enjoyed concentrating on our dementia friendly puzzles over a cup of tea or glass of juice. They are both always pleased with the result. Devika always exclaims how she enjoys seeing the picture come together. Beatrice recalled that she loved doing puzzles with her mother. Staff member Eleni and Resident Gerald decided to do a 100 piece puzzle. Gerald was amazing at identifying the pieces and was very pleased with their result. He said ”I feel like I have done a whole day’s work!”.

NEWS AROUND THE WORLD

Gerald, Florence, John and Beatrice enjoy reading the papers from cover to cover over several cups of tea or coffee every morning. Residents were very sad to hear of the passing of Prince Phillip and followed the funeral closely. Most of our Residents don’t understand Prince Harry’s resignation from duty and obligation and think their beloved Queen is being extremely gracious.

QUIZ TIME

Staff member Helena and Resident Kathleen had a lot of fun quizzing each other on multiplication sums and checking their answers on the calculator. Kathleen commented “I am a very smart young lady you know!”.

BOOK MAGAZINE CLUB

Residents enjoy a quieter time after lunch when they like to read, look at pictures or nap. Resident Jean enjoys looking through books with all types of breeds of dogs. Charles was engrossed in his magazine on the Monarchy and the passing of Prince Phillip, while Catherine enjoys books on birds and had a discussion with staff member Helena describing the birds she used to see during her walks in the Park or in her back garden. Ruth is always happy when she browses though books or magazines on gardens and flowers. Muriel loves reading and we often hear her chuckle out loud when she comes across something funny. It’s a real joy to watch our residents so absorbed and content.

BUTTON SORTING

Brought back fond memories for Veronica, who had hundreds of buttons in her sewing baskets that she used to repair her family’s shirts and trousers. Eileen thought the button sorting was good brain work.
