Christmas at the Devonshire

Our Christmas celebrations started with the switching on of our spectacular front of the house Christmas lights. Our front lights were appreciated by everyone who lives at, visits and works at the Devonshire. We received so many positive comments from our neighbours, passers-by and the whole community. Everyone thought it was a wonderful display and thanked us. Many said that it was especially nice to see festive lights during the COVID pandemic. We received a lovely message from a young fellow who rode past on the bus with his grandma last year and thought Santa Claus lived at the Devonshire. Thank you everyone for your positive comments.

This year we also created a Christmas display in the back patio garden for our Residents to enjoy. Due to the COVID government infection control restrictions we were not able to put up a lot of Christmas decorations inside our home. Residents loved the snowman and lights at the back. They stood by the windows each evening enjoying the spectacular display.

The students from Richard Challoner School sang Christmas Carols to our Residents in the front drive. Residents stayed indoors and watched from the bedroom windows. Resident Veronica remembered that her son used to sing in the choir and commented that his voice was just as amazing as these young boys from the Richard Challoner School. Resident Vivien thought the music was lovely. The other Residents watched, some sang along and it was a happy moment for all.

On Christmas day, our cook Deborah had made a delicious roast dinner and chef Louanas made a Christmas pudding. Residents and staff really enjoyed the festive meal. Peter and John shared their bottle of drink during mealtime. We had many laughs and jokes when we pulled the Christmas crackers. Eileen, Florence and Peter were quick to answer all the cracker riddles.

Residents were excited to open their gifts and read their cards. Veronica said she had never had so many gifts in her life. Florence’s eyes lit up when she saw the wine bottle in her gift bag and through her beaming smile quickly asked Daniel to put it in her room. Vivien and Barbara enjoyed reading their cards.
