Art festival trip to University of West London
Fifteen of us - Residents accompanied by Staff and one family member attended the Art Festival at The University of West London on Monday November 20th. We drove our two mini buses and Residents enjoyed the drive through Richmond Park. We had to stop at a train junction crossing to let a very long train pass and Residents were excited to see the train. Many said they hadn’t seen one for a long time.
Before viewing the exhibition, Residents gathered in the Pillars restaurant on Campus. This is where culinary students learn the art of fine service and cooking practices. The Head Chef talked about healthy diets and shared and demonstrated a recipe for Salmon brochettes on Jerusalem artichoke barley risotto. All of us got to try his tasty creation. Resident Muriel told the Chef that there wasn’t enough seasoning in the Risotto! Residents enjoyed decorating the sweet pastry fruit tart and were really happy to devour the creation they made!
Afternoon tea was a very posh affair, according to our Residents, with a three-tier finger sandwich and sweet selection. Throughout the afternoon tea students from the London School of Music played the flute, harp and grand piano. They explained that studies show that music impacts our taste buds. For instance when the music has a low pitch the food will taste sour; when the music is at a high pitch, food will taste sweet. Residents Jane and Hazel thoroughly enjoyed the music and felt it was very relaxing and did not want to move out of their chairs.
People who live with Dementia created the Art on display. Resident Patricia and her daughter Maria really enjoyed looking at the paintings from the different hospitals, while Residents Ruth and Valerie enjoyed looking at the Boots and Heathrow Airport archives where they found some old fashioned airline stewardess hats, and old fashioned hot water bottles.
All of us really enjoyed the outing and we are looking forward to some more!
