LIGHTS OF HOPE

We’ve continued to replicate the Lights of Hope of St Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver (Canada) for the community to enjoy. Our ‘gift’ has led to excited children asking if ‘Santa lives here’. All of our Residents and staff wish you all peace, tranquillity and a very Merry Christmas.

Christmas Decorations

On December 6th, our staff and Residents helped dress all 5 of our Christmas trees, thus opening our traditional ‘re-dress the tree’ season.  Being a dementia specialist and friendly home, we moved from breakable glass ornaments to safer felt decorations, and we no longer need to worry that anything drops to the ground, shatters and causes injury. Residents can safely re-arrange, add or ‘borrow’ decorations, allowing them to be part of this wonderfully creative process throughout the whole run up to Christmas, not just on one day of the year. We have plenty of spare ornaments ready for use in baskets next to the trees so that there are always plenty to choose from. At the end of the day, our staff gather ornaments that found their way to other areas of the home so that the next day the stage is ready for the next Tree Decorators to demonstrate their inner artists. This means that we get to have a different Christmas Tree every day – it’s part of the Christmas magic!

DEMENTIA AWARENESS TIP

If you’re planning a large get together over the holiday season, as dementia progresses, large family gatherings can often be too noisy and overstimulating. Multiple conversations, loud music and unfamiliar surroundings can all be overwhelming. To avoid the disappointment of having spent days planning, only to be told upon arrival that the person living with dementia wishes to go home, please call us for more hints on what to pay attention to on 0208 949 0818.
