SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS & Tips
Our Residents have been our best teachers. Like all of us, we have good days and great days. The Residents are also in a fluid-state; they go back and forth and surprise us daily. Sometimes we even wonder if they have dementia. Our Residents are not stuck in a stage and their dementia does not progress in one way. It’s remarkable how each person’s dementia is so unique and it’s fascinating to discover how different abilities are retained. We like Teepa Snow’s interpretation of each stage being a gem with abilities. People can be in different gem states through the day just as you and I. You can wake up calm and content and dip into various states if you are angry or reacting to a poor job being done. With Teepa’s suggested gem state abilities, we try to create daily joyful moments with purposeful activities, NOT JUST a busy social calendar but meaningful sessions. We have found from our own experience that by adjusting the care slightly we can support the person to still live well. For example, with eyesight loss, a person sometimes can’t see the food placed in front of them. By moving it out, it’s possible for them to see it. We sometimes have to start off by using Teepa’s Hand-Under-Hand® …if finger foods are better, we make those to support independence. When fine motor skills are seizing up, we try proprioception, where memory muscle fires up with a little support from us. We invite you, our reader, to attend our Champions Day with Teepa Snow.
