In 1990 I had the privilege and honour of meeting and training with Tom Kitwood, who at the time was a professor at the University of Bradford. I believe he was the first person who advocated a psychosocial model of care to look at the brain changes of dementia rather than the traditional medical model. In simpler terms... getting to know a person instead of focusing on the diagnosis.

Residents Vivien, Veronica and Maggie helped staff member James fold the napkins to place them in the drawer, ready for setting the tables at lunch and supper. Veronica said that she loved getting things ready for setting up the table. She explained that during dinner time at her house she would expect her boys to help her set the table and they folded the napkins and placed the knife and fork on top perfectly.

The Devonshire is a home to me. Each morning I stepped through the door it felt as though I was entering my second home. Everyone always had a smile on their faces and was very welcoming.
I enjoyed taking care of all the Residents and thanks to Devonshire Care Home and their continuous training, such as a walk through dementia and so many others they made me improve the care. I learnt that every single day is different and interesting in its own way. That is one of the aspects that kept me happy and smiling at the end of the day.

Dementia touches so many lives. There is no way to really predict who will end up having to live with this dreadful disease. It hits every socio-economic, ethnic and age group, affecting men and women alike. And what havoc it creates! We know it robs people of their brain functions we just don’t know exactly which ones and to what extent.

We continued the 30th anniversary celebration year by inviting 150 guests to our Annual Residents Christmas Party. This year we were very pleased to include our new Day Centre Guests.

On yet another warm Indian summer evening our new Devonshire Dementia Day Centre, next door, welcomed guests including the mayor of the Borough of Kingston, councillors as well as representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society UK – as it marked its opening with a Preview.

On an unseasonably warm 21st September 2018, we held an afternoon tea for World Alzheimer’s Day that Residents and Advocates really enjoyed. Lots of people commented that, it brought back memories of visiting the 1950s Lyons Tea Rooms with their parents.

Father of medicine Hippocrates said "Let thy food be thy medicine let thy medicine be thy food". Devonshire Dementia Care Home has been focusing on learning more about superfoods and adapting our recipes subtly so that Residents benefit without huge changes in the menus.

The beginning of May was very very hot with scorching temperatures into the high 80’s. Residents enjoyed time in the garden having afternoon tea and ice-lollies. Valerie, John, Ruth B, Jeanette, Teresa, and Muriel all commented on how beautiful the garden was with all the lovely flowers, herbs and trees.

We used small doll furniture and figurines and created stories that delighted both Residents and staff. The Residents who participated thoroughly enjoyed the experience for a short while and participated enthusiastically.
